Entry #3: Reporting About a Report
There's an article about whether or not college athletes should be paid. Written by Mark J. Drozdowski, Ed.D., he goes over some of the reasons why college athletes should be paid and some reasons why college athletes shouldn't be paid. Throughout the whole article, he is more towards the side that college athletes should be paid. He utilizes logos in his piece by mentioning all the money the colleges make and why they haven't been using this money to pay their athletes. He also provides percentages on how many student-athletes even receive a full scholarship which is only 1%. He establishes his ethos by mentioning both sides of the argument and the weaknesses in his argument. He knows that what he is saying has a limit. Lastly, he utilizes pathos by empathizing with college athletes that are suffering financially. He recognizes that college athletes have it hard and using diction such as "opposed" and "aren't guaranteed" conveys that these students don't receive all that they really need.
After reading this article, it made me think of how difficult this situation is that college-athletes face. Seeing both sides of the argument, I can see why it's a hard situation to solve. I thought that this article was well-written and the rhetoric that the author used is top-notch. Of course, as with every news article, there is some sort of bias but this article was very informative from beginning to end. Overall, a well-written article and an enjoyable read. What do you guys think about this situation? Should college athletes be paid or not?
